The North American antlered animals such as elk, deer, moose etc. all drop their antlers in late winter and early spring. These are referred to as the animals “sheds”
The Pickup
This allows these animals to start the regrowth process where they will grow another set of antlers to replace their old ones. Often each year, they will grow larger in size. Antler foragers go out into the woods looking for fallen antlers every year.
Regrowth
During the summer months, deer will start to grow back the antlers that dropped during the winter. Similar to the way you lose a tooth when you are younger and it is replaced with a newer healthier one. This cycle occurs every year.
