Who knew photographing an orange pepper could be so much fun, surely not me! But it was and here it is, I really don’t know why I waited so long. Why an orange pepper you ask? I mean other than it being this week’s theme for Crazy Tuesday? Well it is kind of crazy, it’s like what happened in the Little Shop of Horrors song Da-Doo when Seymour acquired the Audrey Two. I took liberty to change a few words but it’s remarkably close, well kind of close, OK not really close at all, it’s a story, but I did get the pepper from Acme for $1.99. So here it is, I added the link at the end for a refresher on the actual song from the movie:
I was walking in the vegetable area of Acme that day.
(Shoop-da-doo)
And I passed by this place where this old chinese man…
(Chang-da-doo)
He sometimes sells me weird and exotic things.
(Snip-da-doo)
‘Cause he knows, you see that, strange vegetables and fruit are part of my hobby.
(Sha-lala-do)
He didn’t have anything unusual there that day.
(Nope-da-doo)
So I was just about to, you know, walk on by.
(Good-for-you)
When suddenly, and without warning,
There was this…
(Total eclipse of the Sun)
It got very dark…
And there was this strange humming sound,
Like something from another world…
(Da doo)
And when the light came back this weird orange pepper was just sitting there.
(Oops-ee-doo)
Just, you know, stuck in, among the green peppers.
I coulda sworn it hadn’t been there before.
But Acme sold it to me anyway.
For a dollar-ninty-nine.
(La-La-La-La-La-La-La-La-La-doo-doo-doo-doo)[1]
I’ve had a lot of these type of experiences and now I had my orange subject for Crazy Tuesday.
As for the shot it’s really a simple shot to prep, stick the pepper on a sturdy stick using some clamps for support and shoot against a black throw blanket that I’ve been using a lot lately. Add some black paper to hide the clamps and the pepper’s all set.
The day was bright so no supplemental lights were required but I did add some screens to lessen the harsh highlights. I set up the camera with my trusty Nikon 55mm f/2.8 NIKKOR Micro lens to focus from the front to the back and shot away at f/5.6. Photoshop aligned and stacked the layers and while not the best, it was good enough for a pepper. In post, the pepper was set against an orange background (sampled from the pepper to get the right shade) and that was it! An orange pepper, fun to shoot and even more fun once I got it down in digital form, endless possibilities I suspect, perhaps a slider or two.
