Tsion Mengistu, 15, receives iron and folic acid supplements from her teacher Etenesh Sime at Haile Aba Marsa school in Sire, Oromia, Ethiopia. The programme is supported by UNICEF in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Health and the Canadian Government.

Like many girls in the region, Tsion is disadvantaged by poverty and patriarchal norms. She has three brothers and four sisters, and when she’s not at school, does most of the family cooking and cleaning. “The males get fed first,” she says. “By the time I finish my chores, there’s less food and sometimes no food at all.”

Tsion would like to have a more diverse diet but faces a number of barriers. “It’s about accessibility and affordability. We don’t always have money to buy fruit, meat and vegetables and even when we can, sometimes they aren’t available in the market.” Tsion wants to be a doctor when she’s older, and likes science, particularly chemistry.
