In this book by well-known modern quilters Weeks Ringle and Bill Kerr along with their 11-year-old daughter Sophie Kerr, kids will learn how to navigate a sewing machine, make smart fabric choices, and use basic sewing tools. Sixteen kid-friendly projects run the gamut from clothes to bags to accessories while clear, step-by-step instructions from Weeks and husband/design partner Bill Kerr walk kids through the creation of each. Throughout the book, tips from Sophie offer design and construction advice from a kid’s perspective. The book “grows” with the sewist, offering more complex projects as the reader’s skills develop.

Making A Cuddle Fleece Patchwork Throw

– Build your skills one fun project at a time.

– Make things you’ll really want to wear and use, like an awesome bathing suit cover-up, a stylish lunch tote, and a handy messenger bag.

– Invite your friends over for a sewing party!

Ready For A Swim Pool Cover-Up

It’s hard to find cute pool cover-ups for tweens and teens, so why not make your own? You can make it with or without straps. The secret to this project is learning how to use elastic thread. Once you’ve figured it out, you’ll realize that you can use the same pattern for making sundresses or summer shirts. All you have to do is change the fabric and the length. You can make this cover-up in cotton, or in stretchy French terry cloth for an absorbent version.

Backpack Decorations

Sophie says this is one of her favorite projects in the book. She had a really good time making these decorations with her friends. You can get creative making the stacked flowers and ice cream cones from felted wool. You can use beads, embroidery, or even sequins. Just make sure that you stitch them on carefully so they don’t fall off!

Sew a Hairband

After Sophie made her first hairband, she began wearing it almost every day. In addition to being cute, it’s an easy way to keep your hair off your face. Although it’s a small project, there are lots of steps. So this isn’t a project you want to make in a hurry or when you’re tired. Once you’ve made it the first time, though, it gets much faster.
