A first visit to this area for me, what a beautiful place, its a pity the weather was overcast however now I know how wonderful it is I will revisit during the summer.
Catterline is a coastal village on the North Sea in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It is situated about six kilometres south of Stonehaven; nearby to the north are Dunnottar Castle and Fowlsheugh Nature Reserve. Other noted architectural or historic features in the general area include Fetteresso Castle, Fiddes Castle, Chapel of St. Mary and St. Nathalan and Muchalls Castle.
Vicinity prehistory
Prehistoric features in the local area include Bronze Age archaeological recoveries at Fetteresso, Dunnottar and Spurryhillock.
Notable inhabitants
The artist Joan Eardley lived in the village in the 1950s up until her death in 1963. Many of her wild seascapes were painted here.
Local Radio
Alongside the commercial enterprise of the local newspaper, The Mearns Leader, Catterline has a Local Community Radio Station in Mearns FM. Broadcasting from nearby Stonehaven in the Townhall, Mearns FM helps to keep Catterline up to date with local and charity events, as well as playing a wee bit of music. Staffed completely by volunteers, Mearns FM is run as a not for profit organisation, broadcasting under a Community Radio licence, with a remit to provide local focus news events and programming.
Jointly funded by local adverts and local and national grants. Mearns FM has one of the largest listening areas of any Community Radio Station owing to the Mearns’ distributed population, Mearns FM was set up to try to bring these distant communities together.
The pier was built in 1810 and although fishing boats operated out of here for over a thousand years it is said that many of the fishermen supplemented their income by smuggling and when you visit you will see why.
Nowadays it is more famous for it’s artists. The magic atmospher and intigue of Catterline attracts many artists to this little village.
Also in recent years Catterline has become well known for it’s Gala and Cartie Challenge which is held in June each year
