Hairy Woodpecker (female) eating peanut butter

Hairy Woodpecker (female) eating peanut butter

Over the years, I’ve periodically put out peanut butter for birds in the winter time. I first came across the practice years ago when I visited the Sax-Zim Bog birding area in northern Minnesota. Peanut butter was put on public feeders as a way to entice birds and mammals. I think the first bird I ever saw eat it was a Canada (Gray) Jay. It didn’t even occur to me until years later that I could use peanut butter to supplement my bird feeders here at home. It seemed to be an instant hit with the birds and they readily gobbled it up. These are some older photos I just recently curated to share with others. An online friend pointed out to me that a person should only use unsweetened and unsalted PB, which is something I have never heard of. I’ve always just grabbed whatever was in my cupboard. Upon looking at the ingredients, it does list both sugar and salt. I guess I don’t know enough to say whether those ingredients are a detriment to the bird’s diet or not. Are there studies out there on this? Hennepin County, MN 12/31/21
