The moorhen chicks are at the age where they are perfectly capable of feeding themselves. However, they still want to be fed by the parents as well, and the parents still feel the need to supplement their babies’ diet. I have seen this amongst some other species of birds as well, such as Robins, European Starlings, and Grebes.
