Pan Am supplemented their all Boeing fleet in the early 1980s with a small fleet of long-range short bodied TriStar 500s. They were used regularly into Gatwick and then Heathrow for a few years. Pan Am was one of very few airlines to operate both the Lockheed L-1011 TriStar and McDonnell-Douglas DC-10.
One of the fleet, N509PA named ‘Clipper Golden Eagle’, is seen here on final approach to runway 28R at London Heathrow with flight PA111.
N509PA c/n 1188 L-1011-500 – delivered new to Pan Am in July 1980, the aircraft operated with the airline for just four years before being sold to the RAF for conversion by Marshall`s of Cambridge to a K2 tanker. The aircraft flew with the RAF as ZE705 for another 30 years, ending up with CSDS Aicraft Sales & Leasing Inc. in 2014 registered as N703CS, stored at RAF Bruntingthorpe.
Apparently, the last commercial TriStar flight was operated on January 7, 2019. More info on the Aircraft design here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_L-1011_TriStar
