The Moutsopoulos Lab’s goal is to implement an integrated bedside-to-bench approach to study oral mucosal immunity in health and disease. Their research program leverages the strengths of the NIH intramural program on rare diseases and aims to understand human biology through the study of patients with Mendelian conditions. The researchers’ studies combine detailed clinical phenotyping of disease cohorts with basic studies in the laboratory and work on disease models with the ultimate goal of identifying therapeutic targets for human intervention. The disease of interest is the prevalent oral inflammatory disease, periodontitis.
