This is a microscopy slide holding a biopsy of peritoneal carcinomatosis from a patient with gastric cancer. This slide has been stained by mutliplexed IHC for different immune cells and cancer markers and has then been digitalized and recolored with pseudo-fluorescence on QuPath software. This research is part of an ongoing clinical trial conducted at the Geneva University Hospitals, attempting to treat peritoneal metastasis using pressurized intraperitoneal aerosolized chemotherapy (PIPAC). The purpose of this research is to describe the changes in tumor immune microenvironment throughout the treatment, allowing for more targeted cancer therapies for patients with advanced cancer. Despite the seriousness of this topic, the resulting images are beautiful, and the presence of a heart-shaped piece of tissue on the left of the image prompt me to choose this biopsy in particular. The rectangular shapes in color are part of the layering of different scans assigned to color channels.
